Come On, You Can Do It!! (Why it helps to have a workout partner: My perspective.)

Today I had a fantastic workout with my sister, and it brought my attention to the benefits of working with a partner. Here are my thoughts. The first benefit to having a partner is the accountability that comes with having a partner. Today may or may not have included a workout if I didn’t have someone to workout with today. It was just one of those days.

There’s something inside you that makes you feel like you’re letting someone down if they’re ready for a workout and you’re bailing. If someone is waiting for you at the gym it’s harder for you to say “No, I’m going to stay on the couch in my old sweats and crank out another episode of “Stranger Things””. That just isn’t going to happen. When someone is waiting on you and counting on you, you show up. Period.

The second benefit can be the motivation that comes when working with a partner. I’m sure there’s some sort of technical psychology lingo for it, and I don’t know what that is, but having someone there definitely keeps me on task, and it’s fun motivating your partner as well. It’s fun yelling words of encouragement as they push through their last round of exercises, it’s fun watching someone else work hard towards their goals. I know I work harder when someone is with me, struggling to push through that last rep.

If you’re looking to change up your workouts, if you’re having a hard time getting to the gym, it may be time to find a workout partner. Find someone with similar skills, experience, and goals. Find someone you enjoy spending time with and who you know will hold you accountable. Having a partner will help you stay on track to reach your goals and will make any workout more enjoyable!
